2-session workshop Friday, Sept. 13, 5-8 p.m. AND Saturday, Sept. 14, 6-8 a.m.

Fee

$160 member/$190 non-member, includes Arboretum admission and after hours access during both sessions.

Program location: Farm at the Arb - Picnic Learning Shelter *Due to the after hours access, the Main Arboretum gate will be LOCKED. Participants must enter through the Arboretum's FARM gate entrance off 82nd street. Registrants will receive instructions and directions in their email a few days before class.

Skill level

Intermediate (those who are comfortable with the operation of their DSLR or mirrorless camera)

Arboretum mornings and evenings are the best times to begin “seeing the light” and our hills and dales are some of the best places to capture sunrise and sunset. Enjoy private access to the Arboretum grounds before and after public hours to capture amazing images that are only possible because of this unique opportunity. Join Don to photograph the Arboretum in light not seen during our open hours! This is a field practice-based program with no classroom time, learning is hands-on in the field.

Friday

  • Learn the importance of light to your photography 
  • Practice framing techniques for capturing the sunset
  • Receive pro tips for difficult exposures
  • Learn Don’s best locations to photograph the Arboretum grounds amidst the breathtaking light of sunset

Saturday

  • Receive exclusive, predawn access to the Arboretum grounds 
  • Photograph the best views of the Arboretum at sunrise
  • Learn tips for the technical challenge of bright sun and low light
  • Share the moment with fellow photographers

Additional Details: This event will require brief walks off our paved paths and up slope

Weather: Class will take place rain or shine, please dress for the weather.

Supplies/Equipment: Required Equipment, bring to class

  • DSLR or mirrorless camera 
  • Owner’s manual
  • Wide angle prime or zoom lens
  • Tripod
  • Small flashlight
  • Various other lenses (optional)
  • Portable dinner, snacks, or drinks to be eaten on-the-go
  • Notebook and pencil for note taking on-the-go

Arboretum entry instructions

You will receive a bar-code ticket for entry to the Arboretum in your email purchase confirmation. Your ticket is valid for entry on the first day of your class. Present your ticket to the gate attendant as you enter the Arboretum. You may stay at the Arboretum after class as long as you want during our operating hours.

Special Access on Saturday
The Main Arboretum gate will be LOCKED on Saturday morning. Participants must enter through the Arboretum's FARM gate entrance off 82nd street. More details and directions will be sent in a reminder email a few days prior to class.

Waitlist form

The best chance of being enrolled in a sold out class is to add your name to the waitlist. Click the "waitlist" button or link next to the class and complete the form. There is no obligation to register if a spot opens. If the waitlist shows enough demand, additional sessions may be added.

Member purchasing policy

Can Members register accompanying Non-member participants for Educational programs at the discounted member rate?

Yes. Arboretum Education policy is that Members may purchase a class or camp on behalf of an accompanying Non-member at the discounted Member price as long as they are registering and paying for at least one spot for themselves. Members must Sign in, enter the total number of Member-price tickets for all participants they are purchasing for, and then complete each participant’s name and prompted information at the checkout screen. The transaction must be completed at the same time as the Member's registration(s). This policy applies only to Arboretum Education programs and classes, and is not applicable to other Arboretum purchases like Events or Admission Tickets.
