Introductory
Class Overview:
Explore the vibrant photographic process of cyanotypes. This historic technique uses UV light to create detailed prints on surfaces. Artist Janae Alyse begins the class with a brief introduction to the history of cyanotype, followed by a stroll through the gardens at the Farm at the Arb, where participants collect local flora to use in their prints. Students are then introduced to the basics of cyanotype by creating a test strip and transferring their first print to paper. Participants experiment with multiple objects, exposure times and techniques to create a custom set of four greeting cards. The result of cyanotype printing is magical and one of a kind.

- Take part in a unique and engaging workshop experience
- Learn the history of cyanotype printing and the fundamentals of this historic art form
- Discover the magic of making your own cyanotypes and gain the confidence to continue experimenting at home
Supplies:
All materials will be provided. Students are welcome to bring a small variety of personal objects to incorporate into their cyanotype prints. Anything that casts a shadow will do! Ideal objects include flowers (dried or fresh), small plant or tree leaves, feathers, prairie grasses, lace or ribbon, buttons, jewelry, skeleton keys, etc.
Bring an apron and water, if desired. Please dress appropriately for being outdoors and in the sun.
Please note: A short lunch break will be provided. Please bring lunch/snacks and beverages/water bottle (limited snacks beverages are available for purchase at the Bee Center).
Instructor Bio:
Janae Alyse of Twin Cities Tradeswoman, LLC is a multidisciplinary artist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Best known for her artistry in cyanotype and shibori textile dyeing, Janae incorporates a blend of natural elements, printmaking and alternative processes into her work. She finds beauty in capturing a moment in time through a tangible print, pattern or photogram. Inspired by the revival of historic hand-craft, her ever evolving work unfolds with self-taught experimentation and sustainable techniques.
We recommend that you enter the Arboretum via the back gate on 82nd St, not the main entrance on Hwy 5. This is the most direct route to access the Farm at the Arb, and avoids potential delays when driving through the Arboretum.

If you do wish to enter through the main Arboretum gate on Hwy 5, you can take 3-Mile Drive through the Arboretum and turn right on Peter Moe Drive to get to the Bee Center (this route may take an additional 15-20 minutes, so please plan accordingly).
Main Entry instructions:
You will receive a bar-code ticket for entry to the Arboretum in your email purchase confirmation. Your ticket is valid for entry on the day of your class. Present your ticket to the gate attendant as you enter the Arboretum. You may stay at the Arboretum after class as long as you want during our operating hours.
