Common Name: Martagon Lily
Scientific Name: Lilium
The martagon lilies are the first lilies to bloom in our Lily Collection. The 21 unique martagon cultivars in the Lily Collection have flowers ranging in colors including whites, pinks, oranges and reds. Not only are the flowers colorful, but the petals are covered in speckles that provide ornamental depth.
Martagon lily flowers are typically much smaller in size than some of the other lily divisions, but they are more prolific in their number of flowers. Martagon lilies are also known for their whorled leaves and flowers that typically face downward.
These lilies are typically purchased as bulbs and are best planted in the fall in a part shade to shade space. As the plant matures, it can reach heights of up to 6 feet and begin to create small colonies when planted in ideal conditions. These lilies are reliable plants for the garden as they tend to evade any major pest or disease issues.
Martagon lilies can be found blooming throughout the Arboretum, including the Lily Collection, MacMillan Terrace Garden and the Woodland Azalea Garden.
