Each artwork by Mark Sifferlin and Kevan Willington is a "splash" — a moment where artist interpretation meets nature, resulting in works of art that challenge the objective view of the environment. Rather than nature observed from a distance, these works present nature felt. Executed in rich oil on panel, the paintings utilize the rigidity of the wood to support bold, gestural strokes and deep, singing harmonies of color. These are not mere documentations of scenery; they are colorful landscapes that invite you to step inside the vibration of the earth and breathe it all in.
Cost: Included with general daily admission, which is free for members and ages 15 and younger and $20-25 for non-members ages 16 and older. Indigenous peoples receive waived general daily admission to the Arboretum when making a reservation by calling 612-301-6775.

Artist Statements
Mark Sifferlin
Mark Sifferlin is a contemporary landscape painter in Minneapolis. Working primarily in oils, he draws inspiration from imagery gathered during his global travels. His work reflects a love of graphic composition and impressionistic design, blending structured forms with expressive, textural brushwork. Layered color and atmospheric depth are central elements.
Sifferlin earned his bachelor’s from the Columbus College of Art & Design. He joined Hallmark Cards as an artist before moving into product development and licensing. He then worked at Party City overseeing new product initiatives before retiring to return to his original passion — painting.
Sifferlin’s work is deeply inspired by nature. He enjoys spending time with family and being outdoors — gardening, hiking and biking.
Kevan Willington
On the surface, my paintings are intimate botanical dioramas set against vast empty light-filled skies. On a deeper level my paintings are a dance between my intentions and what is happening naturally with the paint. If I hold too tightly to my intentions, it won't work.This process can be quite tumultuous. Often I must let go of the original intended direction of the painting and let it die. Every painting is a crisis requiring surrender. The process without surrender and trust can be terrifying. Ultimately I don't know where I'm going. It's a bit like running through a forest with my eyes closed. Only blind faith ensures one's success.
