Intro to Your Camera: Beginner Photography Workshop

Class Overview: 

Ready to move beyond smartphone photography? Whether you're looking to start using a DSLR, mirrorless or bridge camera but don't know where to begin, or you already own a digital camera and are confused by all the options and settings, this class is for you.

Join instructor Don Tredinnick for a hands-on class designed to help you become comfortable with your camera and give you the confidence to start taking photos. You'll work through a variety of topics and exercises using your own camera, then take your newly acquired skills out onto the Arboretum grounds for hands-on practice.

In this class you will: 

• Gain an understanding of your camera and how it works
• Explore the various camera modes and picture settings
• Learn how to get your camera to focus in the right place
• Understand how your camera sees light and how that affects your photos
• Learn how to make simple adjustments to improve the exposure of your photos
• Understand the basics of composition
• Gain an understanding of the effect your lens has on the photo’s composition

Suggested Equipment:

• Camera with fully charged battery and a memory card
• Camera Manual

Please note: During this class there will be a short break; please bring a lunch/snack and beverage.

Instructor:

Don Tredinnick  professional nature photographer, instructor and owner of Frozen Hiker Photography.  He was introduced to photography by his grandfather, who gave him his first camera at about age 7 and sparked a lifelong passion for the craft. After carrying a Kodak Instamatic everywhere as a child, he took the next step in college when a friend helped him purchase his first SLR, a Nikon EM with a 50mm lens, beginning a decades-long commitment to Nikon equipment. His photographic interests include landscapes, wildlife, classic cars, and abandoned buildings and machinery. He has traveled extensively in pursuit of compelling images, with recent destinations including Africa, Antarctica, Borneo, Iceland, Alaska, the Galápagos Islands and numerous national parks. His work has been published in magazines, books and marketing materials, and he has exhibited in multiple juried shows.
