Instructor: Matt Schuth, Naturalist, Author and Minnesota Landscape Arboretum expert for more than 40 years. Discover the awakening natural world around you through Matt's wealth of wisdom, trivia and wit. Matt starts each walk with a show-and-tell from his collection of mammals, bird specimens, nests and eggs, for a hands-on experience of nature.
Discover the beauty of the wild on this guided walk highlighting the showy lady’s slipper, the Minnesota state flower. Participants will observe an abundance of plants and animals across bog, marsh and woodland trails, where each habitat offers something unique.
Enjoy the beauty of wild calla and swaying cattails, where red-winged blackbirds nest and Virginia rails hide. Listen for the songs of catbirds and the persistent call of the red-eyed vireo, and watch for signs of muskrats and beavers along the way.
Great crested, least and willow flycatchers also make their home here, adding to the rich birdlife of the area. Buttonbush, speckled alder, winterberry and red osier dogwood are in bloom, creating a vibrant and memorable natural experience.
Weather: As Minnesotans know, Mother Nature can be unpredictable…that is the joy and spontaneity of nature, and of these explorations. Be prepared for the weather and a possible change of subject matter based on what Mother Nature has in store for participants during this session. Walks will run rain or shine, and will not be canceled due to weather unless extreme conditions cause safety concerns.
