Class Overview:

Join Chef Beth Fisher and Michelle Sharp, founder and content creator for Meet the Minnesota Makers, as they introduce you to three local, innovative, small business owners. The Makers will provide demonstrations, prepare samples, and share the passions that inspire their work.  This September join Blackberry Ridge Farms, Functional Heirlooms, and The Black Radish CSA.

In this class you will:

  • Taste a recipe from Chef Beth using grass-fed beef and learn how Galloway cattle thrive outside during Minnesota winters.
  • Hear farmers' perspectives on what it means to live and eat in sync with Minnesota's four seasons.
  • Meet a nationally-renowned potter who makes earthenware pots that pay homage to her Mexican and Norwegian roots from her St. Paul studio. 
  • Discover how artists create unique surfaces using terra sigillata and masking tape on ceramics.
  • Sample fresh organic produce grown in the heart of Minneapolis and discover the community-building motivation behind this hyperlocal urban CSA. 
     

Chef Beth Fisher is thrilled to bring her experience to a new role as Culinary Lead at The University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Known for her years of teaching at various cooking schools and creative culinary work at several popular Twin Cities restaurants, Beth is now focused on enhancing the Arboretum's fast growing culinary offerings and kitchen classroom educational experiences. Join Beth and discover the joy of learning and cooking in the kitchen!

Arboretum entry instructions

We recommend that you enter the Arboretum via the back gate on 82nd St, not the main entrance on Hwy 5. This is the most direct route to access the Farm at the Arb, and avoids potential delays when driving through the Arboretum.

Directions: 3210 W 82nd St, Chanhassen, MN 55317

If you do wish to enter through the main Arboretum gate on Hwy 5, you can take 3-Mile Drive through the Arboretum and turn right on Peter Moe Drive to get to the Myers Education Center (this route may take an additional 15-20 minutes, so please plan accordingly).

Main Entry instructions:
You will receive a bar-code ticket for entry to the Arboretum in your email purchase confirmation. Your ticket is valid for entry on the day of your class. Present your ticket to the gate attendant as you enter the Arboretum. You may stay at the Arboretum after class as long as you want during our operating hours.

Michelle is a storyteller who celebrates Minnesota’s small businesses through social media and her website, Meet the Minnesota Makers. Michelle connects you with unique small businesses through her Maker features about local food, farms, artists, artisans and authors. Michelle has seen that the more we know about a business owner's story, the more invested we become in supporting that business. When at home, you'll likely find Michelle in her happy places: the kitchen or garden.

Wendy Eggerman

In her Functional Heirlooms workshop Wendy Eggerman makes functional pottery to brighten your day and elevate the moment. Originally from Minnesota, Wendy's work has been exhibited nationally and she has been an active ceramic artist in studios around the country. Her inspiration is found in the kitchen and enhanced by her love of antiques and multicultural heritage. Wendy's pots are layered with a depth and richness that will be revealed over time and use.

The Black Radish

The Black Radish is an an Artist-led Urban Market Garden and CSA in the heart of South Minneapolis. Founders Carrie Thompson and Jade Townsend are dedicated to providing affordable, locally grown produce using sustainable and organic farming practices. Sunflowers tower and ripe beans dangle in magical tunnels at this urban farm. They also foster community through the weekly gathering of CSA pickup, the volunteers who make the work possible and the yards that nourish local residents.

Waitlist

Waitlist form

The best chance of being enrolled in a sold out class is to add your name to the waitlist. Click the "waitlist" button or link next to the class and complete the form. There is no obligation to register if a spot opens. If the waitlist shows enough demand, additional sessions may be added.

Member purchasing policy

Can Members register accompanying Non-member participants for Educational programs at the discounted member rate?

Yes. Arboretum Education policy is that Members may purchase a class or camp on behalf of an accompanying Non-member at the discounted Member price as long as they are registering and paying for at least one spot for themselves. Members must Sign in, enter the total number of Member-price tickets for all participants they are purchasing for, and then complete each participant’s name and prompted information at the checkout screen. The transaction must be completed at the same time as the Member's registration(s). This policy applies only to Arboretum Education programs and classes, and is not applicable to other Arboretum purchases like Events or Admission Tickets.
